Stand Up Comedy Writing (Online)

Make People Laugh!

Even though we can’t get together as a group doesn’t mean that we can’t get together online and make the world a funnier place! This online class is very, very similar to the in person stand up comedy classes that we offer at The Institution Theater except instead of meeting in person every week, we will be meeting on Zoom.

This class is the first step to really developing the stand up comedy writing and persona that will fit your individual voice. There is no rubber stamped style in comedy and everyone is unique. Meeting with a group of people each week, trying new material, and discussing ideas will help you hone that uniqueness.  You will learn techniques that will kick start your writing process and learn how to avoid many of the common pitfalls of stand up writing and delivery.

Although this class is open to experienced comics looking for a place to work on new material, it is also open to people with absolutely no previous stand up experience! Just show up as you are and we will help you take your current observations of this world and spin them into comedy gold!

The goal of this class is to develop a 5 to 10 minute stand up set that is polished and, when we are once again allowed to roam free, be ready to hit the stages of Austin and beyond.

– For ages 18 & Over.
– This class is limited to 10 students.

VALERIE NIES is a comedian, writer, and gluten enthusiast who spends a fair amount of time scanning WebMD, convincing herself she has an incurable disease. She’s written for humor sites Reductress and McSweeney’s and performed standup at the Out of Bounds and Big Little Comedy Festivals. Her sketches have been featured on Bitch, Jezebel, Salon, and Huffington Post; and she’s won awards for television scripts that never aired. She wants a dog but is too afraid of commitment.
